Colchester

The fourth largest community in Vermont, Colchester sits just north of Burlington. It is home to St. Michael’s College, Vermont Public Radio, and one of the state’s last drive-in movie theaters. The Malletts Bay area on Lake Champlain features popular marinas, parks and boat/fishing access points. Thousands of people participate in annual fishing events here each year. Beauty and recreational opportunities abound and lakefront property is highly sought-after.

Colchester has a laid-back marina feel, with water surrounding the town on three sides. Lamoille and Winooski Rivers and Lake Champlain lap at the shores of Colchester. Recreation

Malletts Bay is located in Colchester and is one of Lake Champlain’s most beautiful spots. Camping, boating, fishing, and swimming make every day feel like a vacation when taking in the stunning views at Malletts Bay. Bay Harbor Marina on Malletts Bay offers boat slips and services.

Colchester has an abundance of parks and natural areas for play and exploration. Bayside Park has a playground, ball fields, a skate park and beach and picnic areas. Bayside Park also has an activity center and hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the popular Fourth of July fireworks display.

Airport Park contains 65 acres of space with ball fields, athletic courts, horseshoe pits, walking trails, and two lit outdoor ice skating rinks during the winter months.

When residents prefer more secluded and quiet recreation, they take to Sunny Hollow Natural Area, Rossetti Natural Area, or Colchester Pond. All are perfect for hiking, jogging, or snowshoeing.

Niquette Bay State Park contains over 500 acres with scenic views, walking trails, and a beach for swimming or paddling.

Colchester also offers several bike paths, with gorgeous views and breathtaking rides. The Colchester Causeway starts at Airport Park and connects to Burlington’s Bike Path.

During the warm seasons, the Island Line Bike Ferry will take riders from the Causeway to the Lake Champlain Islands for continuous views of the Green Mountains and Adirondacks.

The Colchester Recreation Path starts at Bayside Park and is three miles long, traveling through wooded areas and Colchester neighborhoods.

Activities

All year long, the Colchester Parks and Recreation Department and the Colchester School District host events for folks of all ages. From the productions performed by Colchester High School’s award winning drama department to the popular Winter Carnival, ice fishing, and annual triathlon, living in Colchester is action-packed. The Parks and Recreation Department also offer classes, camps, and sports leagues to keep residents entertained and active.

Sam Mazza’s Farm Market, Bakery, and Greenhouses is a locally owned, family run farm loved by Colchester residents. Mazza’s hosts seasonal festivals and events, a corn maze, hay rides, and berry and pumpkin picking when in season. Residents are also spoiled by the mouth-watering, full-service bakery.

For theater goers, The Saint Michael’s Playhouse is home to musical and theater productions by Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional talent. Yankee Magazine called the playhouse the Best of New England.

For movie goers, Colchester has a newly renovated drive-in movie theater. It’s a great way to spend a warm summer evening.

Colchester residents also enjoy extracurricular activities like bowling at Spare Time Bowling, taking aim at Colchester Paintball, or curling with the Green Mountain Curling Club.

Transportation

Several main roads, including US Route 2 and US Route 7 run through Colchester. Colchester also has its own exit off Interstate 89. The Chittenden County Transportation Authority, CCTA, makes stops along US Route 7 in Colchester, connecting residents to the CCTA hub in Burlington and then to several destinations in Chittenden County and beyond.

Education

Colchester School District is part of Chittenden Central Supervisory Union. Colchester students in grades K-2 attend either Union Memorial School or Porters Point School, depending on their residency. Students entering grades 3-5 or attending early education programs go to school at Malletts Bay School. Colchester Middle School is for students in grades 6-8. All high school students in grades 9-12 attend Colchester High School. Colchester High School also accepts students from Grand Isle, North Hero, and South Hero, Vermont.

Colchester is also home to Saint Michael’s College - a private Catholic liberal arts college on a scenic 440-acre campus. Approximately 2,000 undergraduate students study here, in one of more than 30 subjects. Classes are small (student to teacher ratio of 12:1) and hands-on, practical learning is emphasized.
