The Onion City

Just north of Burlington, Winooski has gone from an old mill town to a vibrant and bustling city in the last decade. The award-winning redevelopment transformed the historic downtown into a vibrant, thriving,city center with parks and public squares, and the popular Riverwalk promenade. Mill Park hosts festivals and farmers markets, local restaurants are always hopping and many growing Vermont companies now call the Woolen Mill, the Champlain Mill, and the Winooski Block home.

Winooski, Abenaki for “onion”, is affectionately known as The Onion City. Its 1.43 square miles is a short walk away from Burlington. The two towns are separated by the Winooski River, which is used to generate electricity for the state.

Winooski is fast becoming a lively and diverse location. The Winooski Falls project added new and beautiful buildings to the landscape. Condos, retail space, and apartments allow residents to easily park or walk to one of many unique shops or restaurants in the center of town.

Winooski is a designated Refugee Resettlement town and proud of the varied communities and cultures working and living together within its borders.

Recreation

Even though small in size, Winooski offers numerous parks and trails. Residents can hike, bike, snowshoe or ski through Gilbrook and Casavant Natural Areas or take in a scenic walk along the powerful Winooski River on the town’s Riverwalk Trail.

Landry Park is popular in all seasons as well with a small sledding hill and outdoor ice skating rink in the winter. Ball fields, tennis courts, a playground, and skate park are busy spots throughout the year.

Myers Memorial Pool is located across the street from Landry Park and is a six-lane pool used for recreation and youth swim meets.

The community gardens at Landry Park and the O’Brien Community Center are great places to dig into the earth and Vermont’s roots as well as catch up with new and old friends.

Activities

The O’Brien Community Center and YMCA offer many adult, teen, and youth programs to keep Winooski active and informed.

The Mill Museum at the Champlain Mill is free to the public and showcases exhibits about the industrial and cultural history of the Winooski Falls textile mill.

Delicious food and great atmosphere at several local restaurants, including Our House, Sneakers and Mule Bar give Winooski a sophisticated feel and its residents mouth-watering palettes. The Mule Bar hosts live music and comedy.

The Winooski Farmers’ Market is a family friendly event with local vendors, local music, and season long activities. It is located on the edge of the Winooski River as is the annual Riverwalk Festival. Food, crafts, music, and Riverwalk tours are the highlight of this free community event.

Transportation

US Route 2 and US Route 7 cut through Winooski, connecting with nearby VT Route 15 and Interstate 89. The Chittenden County Transportation Authority, CCTA, offers a route from Burlington to Winooski and makes several stops throughout Winooski.

Education

The Winooski School District is comprised of three schools, all located on the same block. Winooski residents entering grades Pre K-5 attend the John F. Kennedy Elementary School. Students in grades 6-8 attend the Winooski Middle School and grades 9-12 attend the Winooski High School.

St. Francis Xavier is a private Catholic school tostudents in grades Pre K-8.

Community College of Vermont is located in Winooski. The Winooski campus is one of 12 CCV academic centers in the state.
